“Dear City Council Members,

Due to your predetermined decision regarding rent control, I just sold my townhouse which I’ve rented for about 30 years. I always undercharged and had one tenant for 19 years. The small landlord doesn’t have a prayer against the 33-page rent control conglomeration you’ve crafted from various cities state-wide. I refuse to lose control of my hard-earned property and yet still be responsible for all expenses (insurance, taxes, fees) on a $22 increase per year. With time, who would purchase rental property in Santa Cruz — tenant included (or many tenants if the residents chooses to sublet) who pays a fixed amount? By selling, I am avoiding ludicrous relocation penalty fees, inevitable headaches with your rent control board and lawsuits (paid by me) that are bound to ensue. In time, there will be very few affordable rentals. Then we’ll learn what a housing crisis really looks like!”
