Let’s Be Honest About the Reality of Taking on Tenants

During the Celtic tiger years, Alison Gleeson and her husband, Mark, wished they had been able to buy a second property but, with the financial demands of a growing family, it wasn’t possible. When the recession hit, though, the Dublin couple were glad to have missed out.

A decade later, with their two eldest — of four — children having finished college and the property market recovering well, the couple have bought a second home as an investment and source of income. They paid €240,000 for a three-bedroom house in Wexford and invested a further €20,000 decorating it. Last summer, they put it on the long-term rental market.
