Twelve-year-old Eian Jefferson pulls an arrow back against the string of a bow and focuses his gaze on the target, 12 yards away.

Coach Larry Brown places a hand on top of Eian’s head to keep him stable, and the arrow flies past inspirational posters of Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan to lodge in the target on the other side of Mr. Brown’s Crown Heights apartment.
