“Imagine an elderly couple, with a son at UCSC. They buy a condo he can live in. They spend $20,000 and many hours of their time transforming it from a shabby rental into a lovely home that provides a nurturing environment for young adults. They pay close to $1,500 in monthly property tax and HOA fees. They then charge a rent to his housemates that provides a modicum of retirement income. For this they are castigated by a recent letter writer and other rent control zealots as “rent-takers,” putting “personal greed” before community. That couple is us. However, because we see flaws in the rent control measure we are spray -painted with ideological graffiti and our specific concerns with it are ignored. Where’s YOUR compassion?”
